School Bus Driver Dies After Crashing into Backyard

(Fox 10) A school bus driver has died after crashing into a backyard near I-17 and Dove Valley Road with a 14-year-old student and an aid on board.

Phoenix fire Capt. Troy Caskey says a homeowner called 911 when they heard the school bus crash into their backyard on Wednesday morning.

When firefighters arrived, Caskey says the bus driver, 56-year-old Lawrence Joseph Plante, wasn't breathing. The homeowner attempted CPR while they waited for firefighters.

Plante was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition. Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson says he has been declared dead.

Although original reports stated no students were on board, Thompson says a 14-year-old student and an aide were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Plante reportedly made a U-turn before crossing the median. We're told the 14-year-old tried to grab the steering wheel and steady the bus, but it ended up crashing into a backyard.

Thompson says they are looking into the possibility that Plante had a medical emergency.

The school bus belongs to the Deer Valley School District.
