National Report Card: Arizona Gets D+ for Emergency Care

(Cronkite News Service) WASHINGTON - Arizona got a D+ in a new national report card on emergency medical care - but so did the rest of the nation in the report released Thursday by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

While Arizona's grade was unchanged from the last report, in 2009, the national average fell from C- to D+. The state was 31st overall, but fell to 48th in the nation, with a grade of F, for access to emergency care.

One expert blamed the state's lagging grade on a lack of resources for mental health, and on a population that is growing faster than the number of emergency room doctors and nurses.
