Facebook Acquires WhatsApp for $19 Billion

(Undated)  --  Facebook has a new voice in social media.  The company has plunked down a reported $19 billion for the mobile voice messenger app known as WhatsApp.

Facebook says the acquisition includes four billion dollars in cash, approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares and an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units for WhatsApp's founders and employees.

WhatsApp describes its software as a "very powerful way of communicating" and says it's on a path to "connect one billion people" through real-time mobile messaging.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says the combination will "help accelerate growth and user engagement across both companies."
